Frank Gore knows that his NFL future with the San Francisco 49ers is in doubt past this season.

The San Francisco 49ers have had Frank Gore as their starting running back for quite some time, but that may change moving forward. Gore has been one of the most consistent running backs in the NFL throughout his career, but he’s 31 years old and simply doesn’t have too much time left playing at a high level. It’s possible that he could remain with San Francisco for awhile, but Gore understands that he might not have too much time left with the 49ers.

From NFL.com:

"“I’d love to be back here but they got younger guys. You know how they feel about running backs. That’s why each week I go out to play for my team and to play for myself, and also to show other teams I can still be Frank Gore.”"

Carlos Hyde is currently the heir apparent to Gore in San Francisco, and he has shown some nice flashes this year. He has carried the football 63 times for 239 yards and three touchdowns so far in his rookie season. Gore on the other hand has racked up 648 yards and two touchdowns on 158 carries.

Needless to say, the 49ers are going to be forced to make a decision in the near future. Hyde is a much cheaper option in the backfield, and has already shown as a rookie that he can make some plays and have some success behind the San Francisco offensive line. That being said, having a proven running back that you can rely on cannot be underrated either.

It will be very intriguing to see what the 49ers decide to do moving forward. Either way, Gore has meant a lot to that franchise and will not be forgotten by the fans.

If he does hit the free agent market, you can expect to see plenty of teams showing interest in signing him. There are still a couple of years of good football left in Gore, but he’ll need a place that isn’t going to ask him to be too much of a workhorse.
