LeBron James: Big Three Should Play Fewer Minutes

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James believes the minutes of himself and teammates Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love should be reduced.

LeBron James believes the workload on Cleveland’s “Big Three” can explain the team’s shortcomings. The team is just 5-4 this season, well below the tremendous expectations had them for the year.

The 4 time NBA MVP had this to say, following a team practice on Tuesday. “I wouldn’t mind it. I think we have to give our guys on the bench more of an opportunity. I looked at a stat and myself, Kyrie [Irving], and Kevin [Love] are three of the top five guys in the league in minutes per game and that has to come down.”

The statistics do indeed not lie. James ranks 3rd in the league in minutes per game with 39.1. His aforementioned co-stars in Irving and Love rank 4th and 5th respectively, with averages of 38.4 and 37.0.

The prospective reduction in playing time could also aid in healing a nagging back injury that has been keeping LeBron’s potency down to around “85-90 percent” of his overall talent. Irving is just 22 years old. Love is 26. James, however, will be turning 30 this coming month, and while that might still be considered youthful in basketball years, it will undoubtedly play a much bigger factor in the man’s fatigue level when compared to his “Big Three” contemporaries.

“I really think it might be a good idea for our guys to play some shorter stretches harder rather than longer stretches. We’re going to see how we can incorporate that philosophy,” said James.

The Cavaliers play host to the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs tonight.
