Running back LeGarrette Blount is expected to sign with the New England Patriots, per an ESPN report.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports that running back LeGarrette Blount will be returning to the New England Patriots after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Patriots are expected to sign Blount, who excelled for the team last year in their run to the AFC Championship.

The door to the Patriots facility must read like the plaque at Ellis Island. Bring them your poor, your wretched and your released and the Patriots shall line them up with Tom Brady and so cure them.

Blount was unceremoniously cut by the Steelers after he left their Monday night game against the Tennessee Titans before regulation ended, prompting the Patriots to bring back a star from their playoff match last year.

Blount piled on four touchdowns in the team’s playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts and with the team all but assured of a top playoff spot this year, it appears that Bill Belichick and company are hoping for a repeat performance.

This could make for a crowded backfield in New England, given the big day Jonas Gray had against those same Colts, but at 8-2, the Patriots are fine-tuning and building depth. That means having someone ready in case Gray or Shane Vereen go down with injury.

The Patriots are hoping the familiarity of the situation allows LeGarrette Blount to once again flourish and at the very least that it keeps him on the sideline at least until the game is over.
