New SMU Coach Chad Morris Celebrates At Whataburger
By Phil Watson
SMU named former Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris as its new football coach and he celebrated in a uniquely Texan way.
New SMU coach Chad Morris is happy to be back in Texas.
Not because it’s his first head coaching gig. Not because it’s where he’s from and he’s happy to be home.
No, it’s because of a certain food he couldn’t get while he was at Clemson.
Morris is a Texan through and through, born and raised in Edgewood, schooled at Texas A&M and spending 15 years at various high school coaching stops before breaking into the collegiate ranks in 2010.

But the closest Whataburger while he was at Clemson was located in Trussville, Ala., several hours away. And, no matter how good the burger, nobody drives four hours and across two states to get a burger.
He was introduced as the new coach of the Mustangs on Monday. SMU will play at Connecticut on Saturday looking to avoid the school’s first winless football season since 2003 and just its third ever.
SMU was 0-8-2 in 1916, 0-9-1 in 1960 and 0-12 in 2003.
Former coach June Jones resigned for personal reasons in September after the Mustangs got off to an 0-2 start and Tom Mason has served as interim coach since, going 0-9.
For Morris, who will be 46 on Thursday, it is his first collegiate head coaching position.
