As was expected, UAB announced on Tuesday that they will be dropping their football program, in addition to bowling and rifling, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

It’s been rumored the past few months that the UAB football program may cease to exist, and on Tuesday, that sad notion became a reality.

The rumors of this the past few weeks drew the ire of a lot of people who don’t see this move as necessary, and a lot of heat has been cast on the board of trustees, and maybe rightfully so.

Football being removed has a lot of people especially angered because it’s not as if the program has been a failure throughout the years. They’ve had their share of big wins the last decade, including one over Nick Saban, and finished this regular season at 6-6, making them eligible for a bowl game.

This past Sunday hundreds of supporters that included current students, alumni and fans gathered on campus for a rally to try and save the football program, but that was to no avail.

After this season, football at UAB will be no more.
