Michigan Targeting Jay Gruden As Next Head Coach?
By Evan Massey
The Michigan Wolverines could very well be targeting current Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden to become their head coach next college football season.
Now that the Michigan Wolverines have officially moved on from head coach Brady Hoke, they are looking to find another candidate to replace him. One name that has begun moving to the forefront has been current Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden, who has been dealing with a nightmare situation with Robert Griffin III.

Gruden has been a very good NFL coach, but he still has plenty of room to grow. He would make for a very solid college coach, and would likely be a very nice fit with the rebuilding process that Michigan is going to go through.
"“One source I trust tipped me off to a potential landing spot for Gruden: The University of Michigan. This source, who is intimately familiar with the Wolverines’ rapidly emerging coaching search, informed me on Thursday that initial contact has been made between the parties and that Gruden’s representation was enthusiastically open to the potential. I can’t put a figure on the likelihood of Gruden fleeing to Ann Arbor, and another UM source I trust refused to confirm anything I asked, but it’s an interesting leverage point nonetheless.” – Jeff Risdon"
It would certainly be an intriguing fit to keep an eye on next year if the hiring did indeed occur. Gruden was the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator before being hired by the Redskins this past offseason.
Needless to say, things haven’t been working out for the Redskins or Gruden throughout the course of this season. They have yet to figure out the direction that they want to go in, and management seems to be split on whether to keep Griffin or Gruden. It would be much easier for them to decide to fire Gruden than get rid of the quarterback that appeared to be the face of the franchise.
Michigan is looking to make a big move with their next coaching hire, and Gruden would be a name that would be very welcomed by the Wolverine fan base. He would likely be a very good recruiter, and runs the type of system to be successful at the college level. Expect to hear plenty more coaching candidate rumors over the next couple of weeks, and Gruden to be one of the biggest names involved in those rumors.
