Expansion, World Cup To Be Discussed At NHL Board Of Governors’ Meetings
The NHL Board Of Governors will meet on Monday and Tuesday and discuss current state of affairs, World Cup of Hockey and possible expansion.
Representatives from all 30 NHL teams will meet today and tomorrow in Boca Raton, Florida for their annual December Board of Governors meetings to discuss current state of affairs of the league. The meetings are set in place to keep team owners and management up to date on the current state of the league, as well as the future of the league and hot topic issues.
One topic that is always discussed is the salary cap for the upcoming season. This is discussed every year so owners can plan accordingly to how much room they will have to spend money and can plan their budgets. The cap is expected to go up next year, despite all the reports that it wouldn’t due to the depreciation of the Canadian dollar.

There are usually other issues that are usually brought up at these meetings, such as reports and presentations on current legal and business issues of the league.
There will be a couple of unique topics discussed at the meetings this year, one of which being updates on possible expansion to the league. This really comes as no real big shock, as there have been talks of possible expansion coming to the league in the not-so-distant future. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said there will be no imminent decision on expansion, and that he will simply just update the owners on the current expressions of interest of expansion.
“All I’ll do is continue to report on the levels of interest that are being expressed,” Bettman said during an appearance in Toronto last month. “There’s no effort crying out for immediate expansion. But we are getting expressions of interest.”
There are four major cities that have been linked to expansion in the NHL. They include Las Vegas, Quebec City, Seattle, and a second Toronto team.
Just what the NHL needs, another Toronto team. I think that’s a brilliant idea — if their goal is create civil war in Toronto.
Another new hot topic that is scheduled to be discussed at this year’s meetings is the re-institution of the World Cup of Hockey tournament. The league is looking to bring back the tournament in 2016. The NHL and it’s owners may want to bring the tournament back to eliminate NHL participation in the Winter Olympic Games while still having a best-of-the-best tournament where NHL players can represent their countries. The World Cup of Hockey would take place in the off-season, rather than in the middle of the regular season when the Olympics would take place.
NHL owners and management have a lot to discuss in these next couple of days.
