Depending on who you believe, current San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh may be on his way out once the season comes to an end.
While still under contract, the tension between Harbaugh and the front office may be too much to overcome and the veteran coach may be sent packing. If such is the case, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen hears the San Francisco 49ers will be looking for a ‘young offensive specialist’ to replace Harbaugh and specifically mentioned Josh McDaniels of the New England Patriots, noted by Pro Football Talk.
"Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the team is expected to look for a young offensive specialist to take over the team. Mort specifically mentioned Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase."
You may recall Josh McDaniels does have some prior head coaching experience as he headed up the Denver Broncos during parts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Things started off well for McDaniels in the Mile High City though quickly fell apart as he couldn’t even finish his second season before being fired. Still, he’s proven himself to be one of the most innovative offensive minds in the game and could be the type of coach needed to spark the near dead San Francisco 49ers offense.
Internally there have been whispers suggesting current defensive coordinator Jim Tomsula would also be a candidate for the head coaching job, so at this point it appears to all be speculation, especially since Jim Harbaugh still is a member of the organization.
If that’s to change though, and many expect it will, you have to assume Mortensen’s report will have some merit behind it.
