New England Patriots‘ tight end Rob Gronkowski will play limited action in the NFL‘s final week of regular season action.

Entering their week 17 game against the Buffalo Bills, the New England Patriots have nothing to play for. They have the number one seed and home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs all locked up. Furthermore, there is no issue of competitive integrity in play because the Bills have been eliminated from playoff contention.

As such, there is really no reason for New England to put their key players at risk. That includes superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski, one of the most important players in the NFL and a guy who has had an unfortunate injury history over the last few seasons.

Of all of their players, Gronk might be the most important. It only makes sense, then, that the Patriots will play him a little bit or not at all in their regular season finale.

According to Ben Volin:

Gronkowski has been nothing short of dominant this season. He has 82 catches for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Patriots look like a force to be reckoned with in the postseason, but only if they have a healthy Gronk. This decision only makes sense.
