Eric Mangini Reportedly In Running For Raiders Job

Eric Mangini is the current tight ends coach for the San Francisco 49ers, but is a candidate for the Oakland Raiders’ head coaching position.

With the head coaching shakeup with the San Francisco 49ers, it only makes sense the assistants will start looking for work elsewhere if they aren’t going along with Jim Harbaugh to Michigan.  Tight ends coach Eric Mangini is reportedly going to be interviews for the Oakland Raiders open head coaching job.

Mangini has prior head coaching experience.  You remember those great NFL seasons in 2006-2008 with the New York Jets and the 2009-2010 seasons with the Cleveland Browns.  I’m sure fans of those teams would just rather forget.

So that being said, what is drawing interest from the Raiders now?  Sure, Mangini has been part of a very good 49ers coaching staff the past couple of years but why is he on the Raiders radar?  Per si.com though, it seems as if the interview will indeed happen.

Is this a case of just wanting to interview anyone who has head coaching experience?  With the Raiders, you never know.  They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2002 when they were in the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Raiders tried to get Harbaugh himself but he bolted for Michigan before the Raiders really ever had a chance to land him.  They are also reportedly going to interview Eagles assistant coach Pat Shurmur.

Mangini has a career head coaching record of 33-47 which seems right up the Raiders ally.  I would have expected them to aim higher but maybe Mangini can be the guy.  My best guess is there may not be a ton of guys willing to go to Oakland no matter what the money is though.
