Atlanta Hawks want fans to ‘Swipe Right’ for Tinder Night
By Bryce Olin
The NBA‘s Atlanta Hawks will host a Tinder Night on Jan. 7 against the Memphis Grizzlies
Swipe right for Atlanta Hawks Tinder Night; swipe left if you’re just as confused as I am about what “Tinder Night” even means.
The dating app, Tinder, is the focus of the Atlanta Hawks’ newest marketing campaign and trying to get people to fill the seats for the Hawks matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 7, according to SI.com.
For those who don’t know Tinder is a dating app, which sets users up with other users by location. Users see a profile of another user and then swipe right if they “like” them. If they don’t like them for whatever reason, the user swipes left, and that profile disappears. If two users swipe right on each other’s profiles, then they are free to send each other messages.
Confusing? I know, right.
I love the Hawks social media team and their marketing campaigns, but Tinder night? I honestly can’t figure out what that even means.
Most teams would be happy with a throwback night, Hall-of-Fame night, or even Star Wars night, but the Hawks are entering uncharted territory with Tinder night. The promotion is obviously to attract single, young people to the game. The Hawks have given few details for how the event will work.

I’m picturing a giant speed-dating scenario during the game where singles spend roughly four minutes with each other before switching seats at each timeout; however, that doesn’t seem very likely.
The Hawks have been very creative this season in encouraging fan interaction, and Tinder Night is another example of how they’re trying to get more fans in the arena and involved.
It’s kind of a shame, really. The Atlanta Hawks are the hottest team in the NBA and are the best team in the Eastern Conference. It’s sad they have to resort to gimmicky promotional events to bring fans to the arena.
Even with the best record in the East, Atlanta ranks 24th in the league in attendance.
Hopefully, fans start attending the games for the basketball and the players on the court, but if not, the Hawks marketing team will keep coming up with ideas to generate fan interest.
I’m going to have to swipe left for Tinder Night, but I applaud the Hawks effort to fill the seats.
