Rex Ryan is the new sheriff in Buffalo which means defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will soon be looking for a job.

The Buffalo Bills shocked the football world on Sunday when they pushed the playoff headlines aside to let it be known they were hiring Rex Ryan as their next head coach. It was a stunning move that developed quickly in the overnight hours, but there is now massive change coming to Buffalo in 2015.

With Rex Ryan now in place with a fresh five-year contract to be head coach, the process of piecing together a coaching staff begins.

According to NFL reporters Ian Rapoport and Kim Jones, the Bills are expected to replace their current coaching staff with whoever Rex Ryan deems fit to join him. This means defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is likely out and will be looking for work in the near future.

This is both sort of sad for Schwartz but also possibly liberating. He was fired by the Detroit Lions after the 2013 season but reinvented himself in Buffalo while leading their defense to new heights. He won’t be a part of their growth moving forward, but Schwartz will have plenty of opportunities throughout the NFL once he hits the market.

Immediate fits include the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins — all of whom have stout defensive talent and all of whom are looking for help. The Niners will only seek help if they promote current defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to head coach, which may happen.

Other spots include the New York Giants, who recently fired Perry Fewell and the Washington Redskins, who may look to move on from Jim Hasslet. Either way, the future for Jim Schwartz is hazy but there is a bright guiding light in the fog that will see the former head coach end up in a position where he may be back in charge of a team in no time at all.
