Could the Green Bay Packers make a play for Denver Broncos free agent tight end Julius Thomas?

The Green Bay Packers are still licking their wounds from an embarrassing 28-22 loss at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks in overtime. They dominated the game for 58 minutes before completely falling apart and allowing the defending champions to head back to the Super Bowl for the second straight season.

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense was able to move the football well in the first half, but the play-calling got very conservative in the second half. It appeared that head coach Mike McCarthy was more focused on running the clock in the second half than finishing off the win. That was a major concern and ended up biting them in the end.

There are plenty of holes for the Packers to fill, and one of them could be at the tight end position. Andrew Quarless certainly isn’t a starting caliber tight end, and while Richard Rodgers showed some talent he likely won’t be ready to be the difference maker that Rodgers needs.

All of that being said, could the Packers look to make a play for impending free agent Julius Thomas?

At this point in time, it appears that the Denver Broncos will allow Thomas to hit the open free agent market. They will likely opt to place the franchise tag on wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. Green Bay will have some money to spend, and adding Thomas to their already powerful offense would make Rodgers nearly impossible to stop.

Bleacher Report talked about which teams would be the best and most likely landing spots for Thomas, and the Packers were listed as a team to watch for throughout the process.

Thomas caught 43 passes for 489 yards and 12 touchdowns in 13 games this season, but did deal with some injury issues throughout the year. He would immediately improve the Green Bay offense, and would be a huge advantage for Rodgers that he hasn’t had throughout his career.

Jermichael Finley was the closest thing that the Packers have had to Thomas, and he was a great weapon for Rodgers.

It would be a huge addition for Green Bay, and it would be a very expensive move as well. They would likely only look to make this signing if they don’t feel that Randall Cobb will be back, but if they could get both of them their offense would be ridiculous. At 6’5″ and 250 pounds, Thomas is a nightmare for any defender to go up against.

Green Bay likely won’t end up being the team to sign Thomas, but they certainly are a team that has a need at his position. His price tag may be a bit too high, but the Packers have to make a decision on whether or not they want to give Rodgers everything they can in order to win a Super Bowl.

Needless to say, it is going to be a very entertaining to keep an eye on the Packers after the big disappointment that they suffered against Seattle. They are going to do everything they can to fill the holes that they have, and the tight end position certainly is one of them. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the Packers show interest in Thomas, but whether or not they will make an effort to sign him is another story.

Either way, it is certainly an intriguing thing to think about for every single Packers fan.
