Sturridge backs Gerrard to become future Liverpool manager

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has backed his captain Steven Gerrard to take over the reigns at Anfield in the future, after he eventually hangs up his boots.

The former England captain, who has played every game of his 17-year professional club career with Liverpool, is leaving Anfield this summer after he signed a three-year deal with MLS side LA Galaxy, and Sturridge has admitted that he is “devastated” to see him go.

“I’m devastated he’s leaving,” Sturridge said. “I think he’ll be at the club in some capacity very soon and I’m sure he’ll manage the club one day. Words can’t describe what he’s done for Liverpool as well as his country.

“He’s still a role model of mine. I look up to him, I think everyone in the squad does. He’ll be sorely missed — he’s somebody who’s given me a lot of experience and helped me to improve as a person and a footballer.”

Gerrard has had limited appearances on the field for the Reds this season, which led him to agree a deal with MLS Cup winners LA Galaxy where he will join experienced veteran and former teammate Robbie Keane.

The 34-year-old skipper has won one Champions League, two FA Cups, a UEFA Cup and three League Cups with his boyhood club, but looks set to finish his career without a coveted Premier League title.

Arguably the club’s greatest ever player, and there have been many, Gerrard will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Liverpool supporters, and may return as Kenny Dalglish did in a future managerial role. He will be hoping to add to his trophy cabinet and aim to win a league title with Galaxy skipper Robbie Keane when he reunites with him this summer.
