A photo has recently surfaced online showing New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick smiling.

It has finally happened. Someone told Bill Belichick about the unbridled joy of emotion. Is there any other plausible explanation as to why this man is showing a rare glimpse of his feelings? Recently a photo has surfaced on Twitter showcasing the New England Patriots head coach with a smile plastered across his face. It is both an eerie, yet strangely fascinated scene. And it has us asking a question or two.

What is he so happy about? Sure, his team is heading to the Super Bowl. On Sunday that Patriots will look to claim their fourth title in six appearances under Belichick, when they take on the defending champion Seattle Seahawks. However, we had never seen coach Belichick showcase much true emotion in those prior runs. So what is so different about this year? His team is older, specifically his quarterback, Tom Brady. His defense, once among the most imposing in the league, is a lot less formidable. And the Seahawks look every bit the part of reigning champions heading in; eight straight victories will do that to a team.

Could this man know something we all do not? It certainly seems possible. Given the organization’s somewhat shady practices over the past decade or so, who can really say what has been going on behind closed doors in Foxborough? Maybe the guy is just happy he is not staring down Eli Manning and the New York giants for the first time since the Pats’ last title win in Super Bowl XXXIX. Does anyone really believe that Tom Brady will not be 100 percent healthy by Sunday?

Whatever the case might be, seeing a Belichick smile is usually a very ominous sign, unless one is a Patriots fan of course. Sunday night will feature a very balanced game. The balanced New England offense, albeit with slightly less talent, looks about as good as it was back in 2012 when the Patriots last appeared in the big game. On defense, this Seahawks squad is being mentioned with the all time greats already.

A second consecutive championship would all but secure that notion. Whatever happens this Sunday will certainly provide for great television. Couple this match up with a stacked halftime show line up, and of course all those commercials, and we have ourselves an excellent night of television. Get your popcorn ready, America.
