The New York Jets are entering a new era and that means finding a viable veteran quarterback to tutor and possibly even replace Geno Smith moving forward.

Last season was a total wash for the New York Jets as Rex Ryan talked his way into another year on the job and basically got paid to show up. The end result was mass firings in New York and a new era has begun with Todd Bowles as head coach.

Part of that new era is to find a new quarterback to lead the team into the future. Geno Smith very well could be the future for the Jets, but in the short term ma veteran quarterback needs to be found. According to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com, that veteran quarterback could be Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"Look for them to add a veteran quarterback (Vick won’t be back), plus another in the draft. Ryan Fitzpatrick, who knows Chan Gailey’s system from their time together in Buffalo, could be an option if he’s released by the Houston Texans."

It’s an interesting choice but it’s not one that is too far outside the box. Fitzpatrick has been around the league, but he’s been effective at times. He looked like he was starting to get rolling in Houston when he broke his leg last year and his time in Buffalo was so impressive at first that he earned a fat contract.

The Jets don’t need Fitzpatrick to be a star, they just need him to be something they haven’t had for years — a quarterback.

If Fitzpatrick is released by the Texans, which seems possible with Ryan Mallett in town, then the Jets making a play on him seems to be in their best interest.
