A new quarterback could be in the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason plans, but the heat is on Brandon Weeden and not Tony Romo.

When the 2015 NFL season rolls around, starting quarterback Tony Romo will be 35 years old. Although Romo had an MVP-like season in 2014, there are two things with Romo that scare Dallas Cowboys fans everywhere. Romo’s age is obviously concerning, but he has already two major surgeries on his back. That being said, the Cowboys need to have a good backup quarterback.

After Romo’s injury against the Washington Redskins in Week 8 of the 2014 season, Brandon Weeden would make the start in Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals. It was clear after his subpar performance, where he completed just above 50% of his passes and a garbage-time touchdown, that the Cowboys would be smart to go in another direction at the position.

According to Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys could shop around in their search for a quarterback.

Firstly, Romo is the guy that will get this Cowboys team to the promised land. That being said, don’t expect the Cowboys to make any sexy moves in the draft and trade up for a quarterback like Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. In fact, it’s unlikely that the Cowboys even look to the draft to find a developmental roster, as head coach Jason Garrett seems content with third-string quarterback Dustin Vaughan, who was a rookie out of West Texas A&M in 2014.

"“We like what Dustin Vaughan did in the preseason. He is a smart kid. He is really conscientious. He wants to be a good football player and works very hard at it. He’s one of those guys, too, a young player and you can see him get better with every rep that he gets. He is going about it the right way. We think he’s got a future.”"

There aren’t a ton of great options out there, but many could be nice insurance plans in case Romo does in fact go down with an injury. Obviously, considering their money this offseason, the Cowboys won’t break the bank for a free agent backup quarterback this summer.
