NFL Network analyst LaDainian Tomlinson said Wednesday that DeMarco Murray is likely going to the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed former San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews earlier on Wednesday, and they’re still a strong contender for free agent running back DeMarco Murray, and there’s a strong chance they get him according to NFL Network analyst LaDainian Tomlinson.

DeMarco Murray was the NFL’s leading rusher last season for the Dallas Cowboys when he rushed for 1,845 yards and had 13 touchdowns. With those stats, and the Cowboys’ inability to pay him his desired salary, the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars have come to the forefront as favorites to sign him. Murray’s other option is to re-sign with the Cowboys, but he’d have to take a pay cut.

The Raiders and Eagles have both signed other free agent running backs already, but are reportedly stil in the mix for Murray. The Raiders signed former Washington back Roy Helu Tuesday and the Eagles signed former San Diego Chargers back Ryan Mathews Wednesday. Mathews signed a 3-year, $11.5 million deal with Philadelphia after he sat out most of the season with a sprained MCL. In 2013, Mathews rushed for 1,255 yards and six touchdowns.

If the Eagles do somehow grab Murray like LaDainian Tomlinson says is expected, their offseason moves in the last week are both huge and a little confusing.

The Eagles traded running back LeSean McCoy last week to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso, surprising many, but the move was obviously to clear up cap space. The Eagles followed that up by signing former Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell Tuesday. Then the Eagles traded quarterback Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams for quarterback Sam Bradford. And finally on Wednesday they filled a hole at running back by signing Mathews.

With Mathews and Darren Sproles already at running back, do the Eagles really need DeMarco Murray? He’s certainly a great player to have, but why sign Mathews is you’re a favorite for Murray? I guess we’ll find out soon enough when Murray finally makes a decision, which is expected in the next couple days.
