The Dallas Cowboys are looking to put the DeMarco Murray debacle behind them. While their rushing attack will likely be weaker next season, 2015 might bring along an improvement on defense. By that, we mean a more effective pass rushing attack. According to reports from NFL insider Ian Rapoport on Twitter, free agent defensive end Greg Hardy will be paying a visit to the team on Tuesday.
The Cowboys finished the 2014 NFL season just 26th in passing defense, allowing 251.9 yards per game through the air. That can all change, of course, if the team lands Hardy, who has developed into one of the league’s premier sack artists.
Before off the field issues involving an incident of domestic abuse against his ex girlfriend Nicole Holder cost him the final 15 games of his 2014 campaign, Hardy was racking up sacks at an alarming clip.
In 23 games started between 2012-2013, the second team all pro racked up 26 sacks.
The Carolina Panthers defense, while somewhat solid with just all pro middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, was much better when Hardy was in the fray as well. In 2014, the team ranked just 10th in total defense with 339.8 yards per game allowed.
In 2013, however, the Panthers limited opponents to 301.3 total yards per game. That total was good enough for second in the league.
Suffice to say that Hardy will be a risk for any team. Although the charges against him were ultimately dropped, the only reason was due to Holder’s inability to appear in court. His behavior will be something that is under extensive watch for any team willing to sign him to a deal next season.
