Sweet 16: Wisconsin Badgers are overrated, here’s why they won’t win a title

The Wisconsin Badgers are 33-3 this season, making them one of the favorites to go to the Final Four — but how overrated are the Badgers?

Typically it isn’t that outlandish to think that a team who is a no, 1 seed, has a 33-3 overall record, and has advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the second year in a row will win the national title. Well, unless that team is the 2015 Wisconsin Badgers.

Wisconsin is one of the most overrated teams in college basketball this year. Not only have they been feeding off a Big 10 conference that has been awful this year, but they haven’t beaten anybody in non-conference play either. They lost to Duke in what was seemingly their only tough game on the schedule. When opportunity knocks to prove yourself as one of the best teams in the country you have to deliver. And Wisconsin got beat by ten on their home court.

It’s understood that they didn’t really have that strong of a non-conference schedule because the Big 10 is typically so tough to play in. They did only lose two games in conference play, one of which was at Maryland. But that doesn’t excuse losing to Rutgers. That’s right. This supposedly title contender lost to a team that has less wins this year than the Big 10 has teams.

Wisconsin has yet to beat anyone. And while they have lost just three games this year, two of those three games were against the only people on their schedule who have mattered.

To win in this tournament you have to have experience playing against tough competition. Yes, they have beaten Iowa twice and Ohio State when they were ranked. They even won a couple games in the tournament so far against Coastal Carolina and Oregon. But we all know that the No. 1 vs No. 16 seed match up is a joke and they barely got past Oregon by a 7 point margin.

So the Badgers were 33-3 this year. Big whoop.

Wichita State was undefeated last year and then lost in the round of 32 to Kentucky in their first real test all season. Wisconsin’s team this year has kind of the same feel to it that Shockers did last year. Everyone gets all excited that they’re team has a great record, until they actually play a worthy opponent.

Then people call it an “upset”.

Whether it is North Carolina in the Sweet Sixteen or literally anyone else left, the Badgers are in for a rude awakening.

All I’m saying is that Wisconsin has yet to beat anyone. And while they have lost just three games this year, two of those three games were against the only people on their schedule who have mattered. Usually the team that comes out of the Big 10 is a title favorite, but that cannot be said this year. Every conference has a down year here and there, and this year it’s the Big Ten’s turn.

Wisconsin just didn’t get the memo. As the tournament moves forward, someone will expose them sooner or later. Whether it is North Carolina in the Sweet Sixteen or literally anyone else left, the Badgers are in for a rude awakening.
