Mike Trout hit a bomb off King Felix in his first at-bat of the 2015 season.

Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who finally won was his first American League MVP last season, didn’t waste much time making his bid for back-to-back awards as the best player in the junior circuit.

In his first at-bat against one of the majors best pitchers, “King” Felix Hernandez, Trout muscled up and went yard.

With the opening at-bat home run, Trout improved his career record against Hernandez to 19-for-50 (.380 batting average) with a .367 on-base percentage and .389 slugging percentage, according to MLB.com’s Angels beat writer Alden Gonzalez.

Gonzalez noted that Trout also homered off Hernandez in last season’s opening game in Anaheim.

This time around, he did it after fouling off two two-strike pitches before hitting what in Safeco Field is a mammoth shot to straightaway centerfield just over the outstretched glove of the Mariners’ Austin Jackson.

The separate Opening Day home runs are the only two Trout has hit off Hernandez in those 50 career at-bats. Trout, though, is now one home run shy of 100 as he starts his fourth full big league season.

The Mariners swept the Angels in last season’s opening series before the Angels exploded to win 98 games and finish with the best record in baseball in large part due to Trout.

The Mariners narrowly missed the playoffs, and as such the two teams are the front-runners to win the AL West this season.
