The Chicago Cubs have answered an embarrassing Opening Day in which ongoing renovations gave fans constant issues finding operable restrooms throughout the night.

After an embarrassing Opening Day for the Chicago Cubs, both on and off the field, the organization has ordered extra toilets to help address the most pressing issue caused by the ongoing renovations at Wrigley Field.

Fans had to be expecting some issues to arise from continuing the renovation through the start of the season. The first bad news broke just weeks ago, when it was announced that the ballpark’s new and improved bleacher sections would not be finished in time for Opening Day.

The organization saved face by covering the bleachers with a tribute to the late Ernie Banks, but another unexpected issue occurred as the Cubs were in the middle of being shutout 3-0 by the St. Louis Cardinals; some fans were spending more time waiting in line to use the restrooms than they were watching the game. Fortunately, they appear to have addressed the issue, at least temporarily, as truckloads of portable toilets were delivered to Wrigley Field this morning.

The decision to add portable toilets will definitely help ease the tension for Cubs fans, who return to Wrigley tonight as the team continues the search for its first win of the season.

The team issued an apology for long waits at the restrooms, and vowed to do better, starting with the installation of these portable restrooms for at least the next two months. Here is the team’s official statement, via NBC Sports:

"“Opening Day at Wrigley Field has always brought challenges with wait times and tonight was particularly extreme. Two bathrooms in the upper deck went down temporarily, forcing fans downstairs where we were already experiencing issues with long wait times. With 35,000 fans showing up in the ballpark, we were simply not prepared to handle guests during peak periods. We have high standards for service and we missed the mark tonight. We want to apologize to our fans for the inconvenience tonight. Moving forward we plan to supplement the restrooms with portable units and will continue to monitor wait times.”"

At least the organization is taking the necessary steps to fix the issues, but considering the fact that their brand-new video display board was up and running perfectly fine, there is no excuse for inoperable restrooms.

The Wrigley Field renovation is already enough of a controversial topic as is, the last thing they need is to provide more fuel for the critics.
