Marshawn Lynch stars in new Ludacris music video, ‘Beast Mode’ (Video)
Marshawn Lynch is finding fame in the music industry to go along with his many NFL accolades, making an appearance in Ludacris’ new music video for the song named after the elite running back.
Marshawn Lynch is a Super Bowl champion, 5-time Pro Bowler and led the NFL in total touchdowns last season. He can now add rap music video star to his list of achievements as well.
The Seattle Seahawks running back makes a memorable appearance in Ludacris’ new music video named after Lynch’s nickname “Beast Mode”. He earned the moniker by plowing through defenders, starting with the entire New Orleans Saints defense to carry his team to a playoff win in 2011.
With the song being given the same title as Lynch’s nickname, it is only fitting that the star running back is featured alongside Ludacris throughout the video. The music video begins with Ludacris fielding questions from reporters, and answering with Lynch’s popular answers from his standoffs with the media during the week of the past season’s Super Bowl. Of course this included a “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” reference.
Lynch, then tells the reporters, “You know why we’re here,” and proceeds to dance alongside Ludacris for the remainder of the song.
Warning: Video contains explicit language
Ludacris spoke with Michael Smith and Jemelle Hill during a recent appearance on ESPN’s “His and Hers”, and provided a little background information on the meaning of the song.
"“The same way he’s plowing down people on the field, I’m plowing down people in the music industry and all these rappers,” Ludacris told Smith and Hill. “It’s a song that has no hook, it’s three minutes of just metaphors and just going in.”"
While the song is nowhere near the Atlanta-based rapper’s best work, it is far from the worst athlete-related rap song to be put out, and I do not expect Lynch to become the next tragic and hilarious example of athlete-turned-rapper.
Who can forget when Deion Sanders attempted the professional athlete trifecta back in 1994. After successful stints in the NFL and MLB, the All-Pro cornerback in the middle of a Hall of Fame NFL career decided it was the right time to drop his self title album, “Prime Time”. The album was not a hit, but it definitely provided laughs and joke material for all of his teammates. Other musical disasters include the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl Shuffle in 1985 and USA Soccer star Clint Dempsey’s numerous failed rap career attempts.
Lynch’s music video debut does a good job of allowing Ludacris to do what he does best, while giving the track even more star power than it already had. I do not see Lynch dropping his own album anytime soon, something that should bring fans of good rap music plenty of joy.
