Harrison Barnes was asked to prom by a high school student, but had to turn her down because he has better things to do, like the NBA playoffs.

Social media has made it easy for fans to reach out to their favorite athletes and have unprecedented access to the players they idolize.

That can be a good thing and a bad thing depending on your social media habits, but one aspect that has blown up in recent years is high school students putting their favorite athletes on the spot and in awkward positions after they get asked to go to prom.

The latest athlete to get invited to prom is Golden State Warriors swingman Harrison Barnes who turned down the offer to rent a tux, buy a corsage and arrange fancy transportation to hang out with some high schoolers for a magical evening.

Why would Barnes down the invite from a nice young woman?

It turns out he simply had something better to do, as in he and the rest of his teammates are headed to the NBA playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference after having the best record in the association.

Barnes was a gentlemen about the whole thing and wrote a handwritten letter to the girl who asked him to prom.

He wrote to Aleena, “I’m sorry I can’t make it to prom. I hope you can find it in your heard to forgive me.”

Aleena was probably the happiest person in the world to get turned down to prom when she received Barnes’ letter.

Needless to say Aleena has forgiven Barnes and that simple gesture from him means he’s got a fan for life in Aleena who will have a story to tell all of her friends at prom, although her date won’t be a three-year NBA veteran who is averaging more than 10 points and five rebounds per game for the favorites to win the NBA championship.

No word yet on if Aleena will be asking someone from the Sacramento Kings or Los Angeles Lakers if they can go with her to prom. Considering they won’t have a prior engagement like Barnes or anyone else on the Warriors, and aren’t sniffing the postseason, I’m sure they would jump at the opportunity to pony up the necessary funds for a corsage, limo and a nice dinner at Macaroni Grill.
