Yankees’ Jacoby Ellsbury bat flips… a foul ball (Video)
New York Yankees center fielder, Jacoby Ellsbury, thought he hit a home run and did a bat flip in celebration. It turned out to be a foul ball.
A common trend in baseball is flipping your bat after a home run. Jacoby Ellsbury during the New York Yankees Wednesday night game against the Baltimore Orioles celebrated by doing the same. Only he forgot that the home run part was a pretty significant portion of the criteria for when to flip your bat.
On a fast ball right in the middle of the plate, Ellsbury dinged one to right field. In celebration, he flipped his bat. The ball landed just to the right of the right field foul pull.
The bat flip has been made most popular by LA Dodgers star, Yasiel Puig. Although the Cuban outfielder has recently promised to tone down the celebratory bat flips this year. Maybe Ellsbury was trying to pick up the slack for Puig. Either way, someone needs to teach the man how to do it.
Here are some of my favorite bat flips from Puig.
Ellsbury did end up getting a hit later in the game. Although, no bat flip followed this time as he hustled to first immediately after contact was made.
