Just a few weeks into the second year of his three-year contract, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins.

The move is a rather surprising one as Saltalamacchia is owed another $14.16 million dollars over his contract.

With that much money owed, it’s hard to see anyone claiming him off waivers.

It’s always possible there could be a trade if the Marlins are willing to pick up some cash on the deal. There are many teams in need of a catcher, but it’s hard to see anyone paying another $14 million for a catcher who is only batting .209 in his time with the team.

The move happening this early in the season is a bit strange, but the Marlins top catching prospect J.T. Realmuto was recently promoted from the minors and looks to be ready to take over the catching position for the Marlins.

Barring a trade, once Saltalamacchia clears waivers and a team can get him at a much cheaper rate, he will probably be on a new ball club rather soon.

While his bat hasn’t gotten going, he can still play defensively and work well with a pitching staff. Teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks, who just had their backup catcher Gerald Laird, would make sense as a landing spot as they are in need of a catcher to pair with the incumbent Tuffy Gosewisch.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was once seen as one of the top prospects in all of baseball as he was the centerpiece of the Braves trade with the Texas Rangers in 2007 for Mark Teixeira.

His career never really blossomed into the career that many expected it to, but he has proven over his career that he is more than capable of playing at the big league level.

Unfortunately for him, he just wasn’t performing at the level his contract with Miami warranted.
