The Astros and Tigers engaged in a pregame standoff to see which team would flinch first.

Following the national anthem at Comerica Park in Detroit, a gaggle of Astros and Tigers remained outside of the dugout. Were they going to break out in choreographed funk dance-fighting? No, they were going to have a standoff, a game of chicken where nobody gets hurt. The last man standing would be the better man.

Despite starting off undermanned, The Tigers won the stare-down and returned victorious to their clubhouse. They lost the game 10-8, but that doesn’t matter. They won the standoff. Those are playoff caliber high-fives that the Tigers were giving each other, so you know that the game within the game is the most important part of the game.

Is there any chance of this trend catching on?

Well, it’s not exactly a new trend. The Dodgers and Cardinals did the same thing during last year’s NLCS.

The Dodgers won that standoff, but the Cardinals won the series. Maybe players should try the opposite and race back to the dugout. Make it a “last one in is a rotten egg” situation.
