Ranking the new Stephen Curry/Under Armour Slogans

Under Armour is pushing its endorsement deal with Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry to new levels with new slogan trademarks.

Shoe and apparel company Under Armour struck gold when it lured Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry away from Nike and made him the face of its basketball franchise in October 2013. Now, after Curry’s NBA MVP season in 2014-2015, it looks like Under Armour is ready to push the envelope a bit further.

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, the Baltimore, Maryland based company filed several new trademarks recently, hoping to secure specific terms associated with Curry and his style of play. Under Armour will then use those in future clothing or shoe launches as part of its deal with the Warriors guard.

In all, the company filed requests for five new trademarks, in addition to filing a request for the brand’s current slogan, “Charged by Belief’. So how do these rank when compared to one another?

5.) “Fall Back”

Now, while I am sure this eludes to Curry’s jump shot, it comes across with a double-meaning. Does it imply your defense needs to take a step back and be ready or does it imply that my skills are taking a step in the wrong direction? Or perhaps this is a seasonal shirt, one with a “Spring Forward” version due to land on opposite points of Daily Savings Time.

4.) “The Game’s New Creative Genius”

While I applaud this one, it just seems too lengthy and too bulky, even for a t-shirt. To me, it is just asking for an explanation, and when I have to explain the slogans tied to my t-shirts or my shoes, it’s like explaining a punchline on a joke; unnecessary.

3.) “The Patron Saint of Underdogs”

Another mouthful, but at least it can be applicable. Everyone can identify with the underdog mentality and everyone wants to cheer for the small guy. However, the words “Patron Saint” come across definitive and are almost hypocritical to the underdog philosophy. Can there be more than one “Patron Saint” and if there are thousands of people sporting this slogan, are they still underdogs?

2.) “The League’s Most Unguardable Player”

Now here is one I can get behind. Curry’s shot creation skills are second to none and the phrase is truly fitting. In addition, I can certainly see a player sporting this slogan during a pick-up game, just to jack up his opponents. Of course, it certainly sets the bar pretty high for the person wearing it, but one should always suffer for talking trash without the ability to back it up.

…and the winner is…

1.) “Baby-Faced Assassin”

Curry certainly comes at opponents, looking all innocent on the court, and that baby-face may make it easier when opponents are left picking their jaws up off the floor when he hits one incredible shot after another. It lends itself to shoe line, t-shirts, whatever. Oh, and for the Brett Friedlanders out there, I hope they come out with a Riley Curry version, just because.
