NBA Draft Rumors: D’Angelo Russell cancels workout with 76ers due to illness
By Jack Crosby
D’Angelo Russell cancelled his scheduled workout with the 76ers this weekend due to a reported illness
With the Philadelphia 76ers sitting at the No. 3 in the upcoming NBA Draft, one of the options that could be on the table for them is former Ohio State standout guard D’Angelo Russell. They were even scheduled to put him through a workout this weekend, although that will not be happening after all.
According to Philly.com, the Russell has cancelled his workout that was scheduled for this upcoming weekend. This news began to leak earlier in the day, and this led many to speculate that maybe he was told by the Lakers that he could be going to them at No. 2, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. In the report it states that Russell had to pass on the workout because he’s “real sick.”
Go ahead, you can get your jokes out now in regards to Russell becoming sick at the thought of playing for the 76ers.
OK, good? Moving on…
At the moment it’s considered a near lock that Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor will be the top two picks of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lakers respectively, although it’s not known for sure yet where each player will go. From there, though, once the Sixers get on the clock at No. 3, anything can happen from there and Russell is one of the options, surely.
Last season as a freshman for Ohio State, Russell was consistently one of the best players in the nation, averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and five assists per game. As the year went on he continually turned heads and his draft stock has risen ever since. With the Philadelphia front court in possession of both Nerlens Noel and a potentially-returning Joel Embiid, their first-round pick from 2014, throwing Russell in the back court is certainly not out of the realm of possibility here.
The 2015 NBA Draft takes place on June 25 in Brooklyn, NY.
