Dan Gilbert favorites a tweet asking about LeBron James as player-coach

The Cleveland Cavaliers owner very obviously appeared to favorite a tweet supporting the move for LeBron James to player-coach.

When he was hired to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers, one of the perks of coaching near Lake Erie was the possibility of the team landing basketball supernova LeBron James.

He did land James, and Blatt’s reward for making it to the NBA is getting questioned at every turn.

Earlier this week, a tweet was sent out to Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and the team’s twitter account.

Through some high-tech sci-fi sleuthing, The Internet (really No Coast Bias) was able to identify one of the individuals liking the tweet as Gilbert himself.

AHA! Got em! Now we can all burn David Blatt in effigy.

The joke is that LeBron James is already the Cavaliers head coach. In many ways, he might as well be. Right now on offense, the Cavaliers have two plays to turn to:

  1. Let J.R. Smith sputter as he crashes across the court and throws up a brick.
  2. Isolate LeBron James and hope for some offense to be generated from the matchups.

This doesn’t exactly require a ton of coaching guidance to draw up the Cavaliers offense.

Really though, this is ridiculous. Certainly as an NBA Finals coach, Blatt isn’t important to the Cavaliers success in the same way that Gregg Popovich was last season or Steve Kerr is this year.

A coaching controversy will follow LeBron everywhere he goes in the NBA. Sometimes it’s warranted – Mike Brown during those early Cavs years comes to mind – but even with the Miami Heat, questions were surrounding Erik Spoelstra and whether he was utilizing peak LeBron to the maximum of his potential. Any team with LeBron James is going to have extra media attention and too much concern for the team’s legacy.

When the media is not busy bashing LeBron for shooting 40% or accidentally showing his willy on TV, then they are bashing whoever is ruining things for LeBron. Now that Dion Waiters is on the Oklahoma City Thunder, the easiest target is David Blatt. When Blatt messes up, it’s not “David Blatt almost calls extra timeout at the end of game”. It’s “DAVID BLATT CALLS EXTRA TIMEOUT AT THE END OF GAME! LEBRON IS ON THIS TEAM! LEGACIES ARE ON THE LINE!”

Gilbert probably never actually read the tweet and favorited it anyway. But that won’t stop the questions surrounding Blatt, even as he guided the Cavaliers to the Finals.
