Carmelo Anthony’s days with the New York Knicks might be numbered, according to Knicks legend Walt Frazier.

When Carmelo Anthony signed his max contract last summer, it was a move that many thought could signal change in New York. We all knew it wasn’t going to be a dumpster fire that was put out overnight, but there has been little progress made in a year and it has become clear that this is a long term project for Phil Jackson.

That might not have been what Carmelo Anthony was signing up for.

Knicks legend Walt Frazier spoke with ESPN’s Ian Begley about what he thought of the Knicks future, and he painted a picture that might not include Carmelo Anthony.

"I’m sure Melo wasn’t happy. His future is now. You know, he’s not getting younger. This is going to be a pivotal season for him to see really how he fits into the Knick plans and how this is going to go from here. Will he ask out, you know what I mean, if he sees that this is not happening? Because right now the Knicks, [it’s] going to be tough to make the playoffs. They are a few years away and Melo knows that his days are numbered, so stay tuned."

It was no secret that Melo wasn’t happy in New York last season, as he didn’t pass up a chance to play for a winning franchise to return to New York and collect a check. Think about what Melo must have been going through as he watched the Bulls make it to the Conference Semifinals, the Rockets make it to the Conference Finals all while the Knicks stayed home watching the Cavaliers go to the NBA Finals with two of their biggest players.

Melo may not be actively seeking a way out of New York, but it’s not a situation that will be slow burning. If — and probably when — Melo wants out of New York, it’s going to be a hell blaze of fury.

The max contract no doubt eases the pain, but it’s a band-aid on cancer when you look at the big picture. Melo won’t be seeking a way out of New York tomorrow, but as the process to build a champion continues to go slower and slower, the chances that Melo asks for a trade go up as well.
