Detroit Tigers sign Jordan Zimmermann

The Detroit Tigers and pitcher Jordan Zimmermann have reportedly agreed to terms on a deal early on Sunday morning. Word of advanced interested between the two teams first made waves late on Saturday evening.

The contract is pending a physical with the Tigers, but it is believed to be for $110 million over five years. Since the Washington Nationals did extend a qualifying offer to Zimmermann, which he declined, the Tigers will have to sacrifice their second-round draft pick in exchange for acquiring the 29-year-old right hander. Detroit’s first round pick (ninth overall) is protected due to being in the top 10 picks of next year’s amateur draft.

Zimmermann established himself as one of the most reliable pitchers in the National League over the past few seasons. He tied for the NL lead in wins in 2013, threw a no-hitter in 2014 and was an All-Star in both seasons. Overall for his career, he carries a 70-50 record to go along with a 3.32 ERA.

Last season was somewhat of a down year by his previous standards, as Zimmerman produced a three-year low in wins (13), while having his ERA (3.66), hits against (204) and home runs allowed (24) spike upwards. However, he maintained his usual durable standard, working 201 innings and tying for the NL lead with 33 starts.

The move to acquire Zimmermann continues what has already been a busy early offseason for the Tigers, whom have been active in the trade market as well, acquiring closer Francisco Rodriguez and outfielder Cameron Maybin within the last two weeks as well.

The Tigers were expected to be one of the most active teams in the game this winter, and have responded accordingly. Last year’s last place finish in the American League Central ended a four-year string of finishing as division champions. Owner Mike Ilitch has never been one to shy away from making headline moves to upgrade his club, having issued major deals to Prince Fielder and Joe Nathan in recent years, while also trading to for David Price, Ian Kinsler and Yoenis Cespedes in recent years as well.

Zimmermann will join a Tigers starting staff that currently features stalwart ace Justin Verlander, as well as Anibal Sanchez and Daniel Norris, whom was acquired at last season’s trade deadline as a part of the Price trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.
