David Price agrees to terms with Boston Red Sox
David Price will be heading to the Boston Red Sox
One of the biggest dominoes in the free agent picture has dropped, as reports have surfaced that pitcher David Price has agreed to terms on a seven-year contract with the Boston Red Sox that will reach $217 million in total value.
If the contract details are correct, it will be the largest deal in history for pitcher, surpassing the seven-year, $210 million deal Max Scherzer received from the Washington Nationals last winter. It is also believed that the deal will have an opt-out clause he can activate after three years. The average annual value of the deal will sit at $31 million per year, none of which will be deferred.
Price was the hottest property on the free agent market this winter, on the heels of a Cy Young Award runner-up campaign. Split between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, Price worked to a 18-5 record, along with 225 strikeouts and an American League-best 2.45 ERA.
Before agreeing to come to Boston, the 30-year-old lefty had been heavily connected with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants as possible destinations as well. Boston was reported to be the team that was most willing to make a massive commitment towards landing price. Winner of the 2012 AL Cy Young Award with the Tampa Bay Rays, Price will return to the American League East where he has spent all but a year of his career.
Price will join former teammate Rick Porcello, as well as Clay Buchholz and Wade Miley in the Boston rotation.
