The New York Jets were supposed to ease into the Todd Bowles era, not make the immediate impact that they did. While one year doesn’t turn a team into a contender, the Jets surprising success in 2015 did manage to win over hearts and minds who had counted them out before the year started.

Had New York not gone and went belly up against the Bills in Week 17, they would have punched a postseason ticket and might have even beaten the Bengals in the Wild Card round like the Steelers did on Saturday. A lot of the reason the Jets had enough success to make that sort of a statement had everything to do with their defense this season. It’s not a complete unit, but Bowles is a defensive minded head coach who could use a stud linebacker to sit behind his rising defensive front.

A linebacker like Georgia’s Leonard Floyd.

Floyd was a huge piece of the Bulldogs defensive success over the last years, and he has the skill set that Bowles can use to birth a new linebacking corps in New York. He has a pass rushing presence that will come in handy for the Jets but he has also established an ability to cover receivers as well. Sitting in a division with Rob Gronkowski, and playing in an era where tight ends are basically extra wide outs, having someone as versatile as Lloyd is exactly what the Jets and Bowles need.
.
