The Buffalo Bills made quite the hire on Wednesday in former safety Ed Reed.

When the Miami Hurricanes head coaching job opened up last year, one of the people who stepped up to offer their services was former Miami star safety Ed Reed. Of course, while he was a little serious, we knew he wouldn’t be getting the chance to be the head coach of his beloved school.

However, he will be getting a chance to get his coaching career started and he’ll be getting it started on the NFL level.

The Buffalo Bills announced on Wednesday that Reed will be joining their staff for the 2016 season as an assistant defensive backs coach. Reed has ties to Bills head coach Rex Ryan, playing for him with both the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets. So, as you’d imagine, Ryan is pretty excited to have Reed join the fold.

“Ed Reed is going to be such a great asset to our team,” said head coach Rex Ryan. “Obviously he’s played in this system and been an MVP caliber guy in this system. He’s going to be such a great asset for players. He’s a real student of the game as well and he’s going to be a phenomenal coach.”

Reed retired in May of last year, and many figured that it would only be a matter of time before he made his way back into the game of football as a coach. Starting out as a defensive backs coach is the perfect start for Reed, as there have been few players in the history of the NFL who had a brain for that area of the field like him.

Bills players just had better remember not to ask him if he’s alright.

During his time in the NFL, Reed was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and he was selected First Team All-Pro five times.
