Niklas Kronwall has been placed on the long-term injured reserve list due to a knee injury

The Detroit Red Wings enter the post-All Star break in second place in the Atlantic Division thanks to a well balanced blue line. They will be forced to make some adjustments as Niklas Kronwall has been placed on the long-term injured reserve list after undergoing knee surgery.

Because Kronwall hasn’t played since January 17, the Red Wings have backdated his placement on the LTIR to that date. Players placed on the long-term injured reserve list must spend at least 10 games on the list before being eligible to return. He is eligible to come off the list on February 14th against the Boston Bruins.

Losing Niklas Kronwall won’t be easy for Detroit, as he averages over 22 minutes of ice time per night. Mike Green has been helping to fill that void as of late and so has Danny DeKeyser and Jonathan Ericsson has helped as well. Kronwall brings a physical presence to a blue line that is otherwise more finesse and skill based and he usually draws the matchups against the bigger forwards and that’s something that they have struggled with since losing him.

Luckily for Detroit, it doesn’t sound like he’ll miss too much time as his knee surgery was relatively minor. He has 17 points in 45 games this season.
