NFL Rumors: Ryan Fitzpatrick will hit free agency

The New York Jets won’t reach a new agreement with Ryan Fitzpatrick before free agency opens.

While the New York Jets haven’t really revealed much of their free agency plan outside of franchise tagging Mo Wilkerson, they might have to do some last minute shuffling. It was assumed that the team would be able to reach a new agreement with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick before free agency owned, but that doesn’t appear likely to happen.

According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, Fitzpatrick is now expected to hit the free agent market rather than strike a deal with the Jets.

This doesn’t mean his time in New York is over, it just means that the Jets might end up losing their starter to another team. Fitzpatrick isn’t a franchise quarterback by any means, but he’s played well enough that a team like the Browns might overpay to get him since that’s what Cleveland does.

More realistically, Fitzpatrick might draw serious interest from a team as a backup and he might end up agreeing to that if the contract is right. New York is probably the only place he’ll be able to start, but if he wants a crack at a shaky quarterback situation, signing with Denver or a team like that might not be a terrible idea.
