Report: Taylor Mays suspended first four games of 2016 NFL season
Free agent safety Taylor Mays has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season.
Taylor Mays entered the 2016 off-season as a safety depth option in free agency, potentially looking to sign a one-year deal to rebuild his value after an unsuccessful stay with the Oakland Raiders in 2015. Adam Schefter reports that Mays has been suspended for four games for violating NFL policy.
It remains to be seen exactly what Mays did, but it appears that it is related to either performance-enhancing drugs or violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Mays was looking like a decent safety depth addition but now teams will likely back away from the troubled safety and look elsewhere.
Taylor Mays has played in 80 NFL games but has started in just 15 of them. He has 11 career passes defended with one sack and 107 tackles. Mays was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2010 NFL draft in the second round after attending USC. He has been granted chances by various teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals and the Oakland Raiders.
Teams looking to acquire safety depth after the fourth game of the season could be interested in Mays, who also has experience playing on special teams.
