Johnny Manziel reportedly ignored advice from LeBron James
By Jason Parker
It appears that not even LeBron James could help Johnny Manziel in Cleveland.
It’s not very often you get the chance to get advice from one of the top athletes in all of professional sports when you are getting ready to head to the pros. Such was the case with free agent quarterback Johnny Manziel.
After a college career that was highlighted by winning the Heisman Trophy as a redshirt freshman in 2012, Manziel dealt with the spotlight during his only other college season by continuously finding himself doing things that had people shaking their heads. After turning pro, Manziel signed a deal with the marketing group headed by legendary NBA star LeBron James.
As luck would have it, the two would play in the same city as Manziel was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and James came home to sign with the Cavaliers. Despite having a mentor-like figure who could help him get adjusted to the pro game and dealing with being in an even bigger spotlight, those close to Manziel say the quarterback wouldn’t take advice from LeBron:
"“When he had LeBron James as a mentor, texting him all the time, hanging out at his house watching football, and Johnny didn’t listen to his advice? That’s when I knew he had a problem,” one of Manziel’s former coaches said."
The article, published by Sports Illustrated, said that Manziel didn’t enjoy playing in Cleveland, continuously making comments about Dallas (home of the Cowboys, who expressed an interest in drafting him out of college). The article said that Browns players didn’t dislike Manziel that he treated his teammates well.
The Browns cut ties with Johnny Manziel earlier this month, just the latest in a series of things the quarterback has had to deal with. An investigation continues in the Dallas area regarding a domestic violence incident in late January involving Manziel and his ex-girlfriend.
