Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler got a technical for doing a pull-up on the rim against the Houston Rockets.

Every since Maryland Terrapins forward Jake Layman hung on the rim and got a controversial technical in the NCAA Tournament, there has been a lot of discussion about getting technical fouls for hanging on the rim at both the college and pro levels. Certainly there’s some cases where they shouldn’t be handed out, like the one Layman got and then there’s moments like the one Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler had on Thursday night, where he earned his technical.

As Butler put down a huge dunk against the Houston Rockets, he decided to do a pull-up on the hoop to further emphasize the dunk and show off. Butler was immediately hit with a technical foul and could not believe that he was given one.

While Layman hung on the rim so he wouldn’t hurt himself coming down, Butler’s hanging on the rim was clearly showing off and the reason the rule was put in initially. Sure, hanging on the rim seems like a stupid reason to get a technical anyways, but there’s a right way of doing it and a wrong way of doing it.

Butler’s was a wrong way of doing it.
