The 100 Season 3, Episode 12 recap and review: Demons
Emerson returns for revenge, Murphy gets two surprise visitors, and Clarke tries to save her friends in the latest episode of The 100.
‘Demons’ gave off a different vibe compared to other The 100 episodes as it played it into certain horror movie tropes with creepy music, lights flickering, and our characters being hunted by a crazed maniac. And just like any other horror movie we lost another beloved character.
The episode started out with the classic “let’s tell horror stories around a campfire and hope nothing bad actually happens.” Miller is telling Harper and Bryan a ghost story about a massacre that happened after Unity Day on Alpha Station. A man named Captain Fidalgo murder 11 people with a metal hook after being haunted by his wife and kids, who were killed by the bombs. After murdering these people Fidalgo wrote “demons” (I see what you did there writers) in his own blood as he chopped the bodies into pieces and hung them in the mess hall. We can stop with the Ark horror stories now.
After finishing the story, Miller goes outside to use the bathroom, because after telling a terrifying ghost story the first thing you want to do is going to the bathroom alone. Of course, Harper and Bryan hear a loud noise. Bryan goes to check on him and another thump is heard. Harper isn’t sure if the guys are joking with her or should genuinely be concerned. Before she’s able to make it out of the cave a Grounder jumps out and grabs her.
Did they ever watch horror movies on the Ark? Because if they did, they should have known nothing good comes from telling scary stories around a campfire while you’re in the middle of a war.
Clarke, Bellamy, Monty, Jasper, Raven, Octavia, and Sinclair arrive at Camp Arkadia. Bellamy tries to contact Miller, Harper, and Bryan to see where they are, but they just entered a horror movie plot. What’s even creepier, when the gang shows up to Arkadia, no one is there. The entire camp is empty. To add on to the creepy vibes, Octavia sees the spot where Lincoln was killed and his blood remains. Their mission: get Lincoln’s sketchbook and get the hell out.
That should go smoothly, right? Ahhh.
Raven has read Rebecca’s journals and catches up to what we all know about what happened with A.L.I.E blowing up the Earth and why Becca created A.L.I.E 2.0. We also learn from her journals is that Becca altered her genes, which is what made her blood black and able to merge with the chip. Clarke says that the genetic mutation became hereditary, because of the nightsblood existences. Which makes sense about why they’re the only ones that the chip wouldn’t kill.
Meaning, finding Luna to stop A.L.I.E is a must.
Octavia goes to Lincoln’s room and finds his jackets. She begins to breakdown, but she turns that sadness into angry and starts wrecking things. She finds Lincoln’s sketchbook which has Luna’s location in it. Jasper tells her “It’s okay to fall apart a little, Octavia. You loved him.” but Octavia says “you don’t mourn the dead until the war is over.” Before the two are able to get back, the same Grounder who took Miller, Harper, and Bryan knocks out Jasper and strangles Octavia.
2 down 5 to go.
Raven gets deeper into Becca’s journals and thinks she can activate the chip. Since Lexa had the chip in her, she most likely knew the phrase. Clarke tries “Blood must have blood” in both languages, but fails. Monty takes a crack at it with Becca’s company’s motto, “Seek higher things,” but doesn’t work. Raven suggest it could be in Latin and luckily enough, that’s something Sinclair has studied and when he says the phrase, the AI comes to life.
Raven becomes entranced by the chip and it seems to be pulling her closer, but Clarke stops her. She tells Raven the AI was wanting her brain and anyone that isn’t a nightsblood would be killed if they came in direct contact with it. Which is why they need to find Luna, to host the AI so they can get the code to destroy A.L.I.E.
Clarke and Monty head off to find the others and enter a hall with flickering lights and creepy children’s music playing. “Don’t follow the creepy music.” I agree with Monty, never follow the creepy music. Clarke being Clarke continues on. They reach the end and Clarke finds a music box that says “Aaron” and all of a sudden red smoke fills the room knocking them out. Or so we think.
The Grounder comes to get Clarke, but she’s faking and rips off his mask. SURPRISE IT’S EMERSON! Seriously, this guy is like that annoying cockroach that just won’t die. Clarke is able to get away and runs to find Bellamy. She warns him of Emerson’s return and they radio Raven and Sinclair to lock down the hangar.
Unfortunately, Emerson is able to sneak his way in (like a cockroach would) and turns out the lights. Sinclair is trying to open the doors for Clarke and Bellamy, but Emerson stabs him in the stomach. Sinclair yells at Raven to stay in the rover. Raven being Raven, runs to him, wanting to save him. He keeps repeating to stay in the rover, but it’s too late, Sinclair dies. Raven is crying as Emerson grabs her.
Jumping to Polis, Emori has arrived. She’s pretending to be a vendor selling cooked rats. She finds Murphy who’s walking through the streets with Ontari. She tells him she heard rumors about the Commander’s new handsome Skaikru flamekeeper and knew it was Murphy.
He tells her to meet him at the flamekeeper’s lair where the two waste no time in showing just how much they’ve missed each other. Was this really the right time for all that? Anyways, he tells her everything that’s be going on and how Ontari is a fake commander, because she doesn’t have the flame and that she has taken a liking to him. Which is a very good move, always stay truthful with your lover. She doesn’t seem to really mind, “Who could blame her.”
Clarke and Bellamy find Sinclair’s body and Clarke radios Emerson. He’s in the airlock where he was kept prisoner at Camp Jaha. He tells her to come without weapons and he will let her friends go. But Bellamy thinks her distracting him while he shoots Emerson is a better plan.
The plan wasn’t better. Emerson knows Bellamy is there, which makes sense, because if Emerson has tracked our gang he would know Bellamy wouldn’t be far behind Clarke. He tells Bellamy to turn over his weapons or he’ll kill Octavia. He cuffs Bellamy up with the rest. Emerson makes Clarke get her on knees with a gun to her head. He reminds her of all the people she’s killed in Mount Weather including his wife, kids, and brother.
“Did you really think I’d be happy with just one life in return?” Emerson tells her. He shuts the airlock doors as the oxygen starts to leave the room, forcing Clarke to watch her friends slowly die. Clarke remembers the music box and says “Aaron” which is Emerson’s son’s name and he becomes distracted. Before she can open the airlocks he grabs her again and slams her head on the door. Emerson wants to know if she has any final words and she says “ascende superius” (the phrase to active the AI) and sticks the chip into this neck. It comes alive and he begins the bleed out and dies. Clarke opens the airlock doors just in time, saving her friends.
Before leaving to find Luna, the gang takes a moment to mourn their friends, Sinclair and Lincoln. Bellamy finds Lincoln’s body and Octavia is able to grieve for him. They build a pyre for their bodies. My heart breaks all over again for Lincoln and Sinclair, but this is a beautiful scene.
In the throne room, Ontari is hearing from her people and one familiar voice is heard saying “You don’t have to be a false commander” and in that moment, we were all Murphy “You son of a bitch.” It’s Jaha. Are you surprised? I certainly was. Jaha always seems to pop up at the worst times. He tells Ontari he heard this from her false flamekeeper. Murphy tells her to kill him because he never told Jaha that. Emori enters and confirms everything Jaha said. She took the key. Guys, we’ve lost Emori, she’s in the City of Light. Noooooo. Jaha tells Ontari she can have all the power and wisdom if she does this one thing, swallows the City of Light key. Wrong key Ontari.
Clarke, Bellamy, Jasper, and Octavia are off to find Luna, but Raven and Monty tell them they’re staying behind. Raven doesn’t want to slow them down and would be more of use there. She believes she can pull the coding from the Ark mainframe to bring down A.L.I.E. Miller, Bryan, and Harper stayed behind for protection.
The episode ends in Polis, Emori enters the throne room and says the gates of Polis are opened with Jaha and Ontari standing beside A.L.I.E, who is seated on the throne.
Exactly what A.L.I.E needed, a throne to build her ego even more.
Quick notes:
- Not only does A.L.I.E want Skakri, she wants all the Grounders too. Greedy much? Does the City of Light even have that much room?
- The gang has so much faith in Luna, but let’s just hope she’s willing to even help our characters.
- I’m not okay with Sinclair’s death. Writers, stop taking the good ones, it hurts too much.
- And is Murphy okay, can we get him out of Polis and reunited the others, please?
- Did anyone else notice the cold shoulder Monty gave to Jasper when saying goodbye? Come on guys, don’t do that.
