This weekend has been a big one for anyone expecting Floyd Mayweather to have a short retirement.

While there’s been much discussion in the boxing world about how the sport will go on without Floyd Mayweather, maybe it doesn’t need to worry about that yet considering how many signals he’s giving about ending his brief retirement.

ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell reported that Mayweather’s company, Mayweather Promotions, filed several trademarks on April 21 that revolved around the number 50. That’s significant because Floyd stepped away from boxing with a 49-0 record, meaning his next victory would get him to that milestone number.

Mayweather has been traveling the globe with his daughter and promoting other fighters as of late, and it was in that role that he appeared on Showtime Saturday night. His fighter Badou Jack fought to a majority draw against Lucien Bute, but the big news was made by Mayweather himself.

During an interview with Jim Gray, Floyd mentioned that he had been talking with Showtime and CBS, even mentioning a possible comeback opponent. As he is wont to do, he tried to downplay his comments as soon as he made them, but he was cordial when Gray asked what it would take to get him to put the gloves on again.

The trademark news suggests his comments weren’t just made on the spur of the moment, and that Mayweather’s team has been seriously considering his return for at least several weeks. While he’s clearly not in fighting shape at the moment (something Gray gently teased him about), Floyd’s work ethic in the gym would probably allow him to train on a normal schedule should something be announced.

Or put another way, we probably haven’t seen the last of Floyd Mayweather, boxer. Floyd Mayweather, retiree, can wait. There’s too much money in it for Money to stay on the sidelines for now.
