Full highlights and results for Roman Reigns vs AJ Styles for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WWE Payback

Roman Reigns won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, but AJ Styles then became the No. 1 Contender on the RAW after Mania. As such, Styles had been waiting for WWE Payback since that night, waiting to get his hands on Reigns and challenge for the biggest title in WWE for the first time in his career.

The start of this match was largely just a power struggle as both men tried to find their footing. Styles would try to let Reigns know that he came to play at WWE Payback, but Roman would have the answer or counter:

The same can be said of the opposite, though, as Styles was ready for Roman too:

However, it was the power of the champion that ultimately proved to be the advantage in the early going of this match. He was able to catch some big strikes and slams. Moreover, when Styles tried to start using his speed and quickness, Roman was ready with a wicked clothesline that turned the challenger inside out:

With the advantage in his hands for a bit more, Reigns then looked to try and put the match away relatively early. Styles went down in one corner and Roman cocked his fist in the other corner to set up for the Superman Punch. AJ seemed to have that scouted, though, as he countered it with a nice enzuigiri:

After that, it was a lot of offense for Styles that showcased his hard-hitting, fast-paced offense:

He even got the champ locked in the Calf Crusher at one point and Reigns was in dire straights:

However, the highlight undoubtedly was Styles getting Roman reeling on the outside after he broke the hold at the ropes. That’s when AJ went off of the top rope and hit an enormous Phenomenal Forearm through the announce table:

Both men were incapacitated, though, after that huge dive and struggled to get back into the ring. Styles ultimately made it in time, but Reigns did not. That gave AJ the win by count-out, which allowed Roman to keep the title—that is until Shane McMahon came out to address the situation.

He said that title matches weren’t going to end like that under his watch, making the stipulation that there would be no count-outs.

The match went on for a few more minutes, starting with Styles unleashing a furious array of strikes that culminated with a Pele Kick:

However, Reigns tried to fight back after a second and then inadvertently caught AJ with a low-blow:

The ref saw it and called for the match to end by disqualification—which then called out Stephanie McMahon.

Like Shane, Steph said that WWE Payback wouldn’t end like that either, saying that the match would start once again, this time with no disqualifications either.

With the new stipulation in place, the action quickly spilled to the outside with the two men absolutely beating the hell out of one another:

Back in the ring, though, Styles went for another Phenomenal Forearm and got caught by a Superman Punch and then another:

That left AJ in a bad way, but as the champ went to set up for the Spear, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson came out. They then pulled Styles out of the way and attacked Roman, hitting the Magic Killer on Reigns:

As Styles came to on the outside, he had no idea what had transpired. The challenger climbed the apron and hit the Phenomenal Forearm. Reigns got his foot on the rope to break the pin (which is odd in a no DQ match). That’s when The Usos came out to try and help their cousin and take out Gallows and Anderson.

That cluster led to a distraction and both Styles and Reigns took out the pile outside at one point.

It looked like AJ might have it locked up after another forearm and then a Springboard 450, but Reigns kicked out:

Then, of course, Styles blocked a Superman Punch and looked for another big Springboard move to hit the champ with. Reigns ducked it, though, and then hit the Spear:

That was enough to end the match with Roman as the champ with the win.
