Five reasons that the Lakers need to trade for Paul George this offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t a part of the 2016 NBA Playoffs (nor were they ever even remotely close to being in that conversation this year). However, that hasn’t stopped them from making waves around the league over the past week. First, they hired Golden State Warriors assistant Luke Walton to be their next head coach. Then came a rumor from Colin Cowherd that they would trade the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft if they were to get it in the lottery.

On Wednesday came perhaps the biggest rumor of all, though, as Bill Simmons reported that there was buzz around the league that the Lakers were going to go after and try to trade for current Indiana Pacers star forward Paul George this offseason using their potential top-3 draft pick as the centerpiece of a package to try and get a deal for PG-13 done.

Obviously that’s a bit of a complicated affair for the Lakers beyond just the fact that they’d have to persuade the Pacers to part with Paul George. Los Angeles first has to wait to see if they keep their first-round draft pick before they could even think of making a trade with the selection as part of an outgoing package. If the pick falls out of the top-3, it then transfers to the Philadelphia 76ers from a previous trade. If it’s in the top-3, though, the Lakers hold onto it and have every right to try and trade it.

With that technicality out of the way, though, the Lakers could desperately use a player like Paul George on their roster moving forward into the post-Kobe Bryant era. Here are five reasons why the Lakers need Paul George on their roster.
