Jahlil Okafor can’t handle the trade rumors
By John Buhler
Jahlil Okafor’s name has been in circulation to be traded by the Philadelphia 76ers and he’s not handling them well at all during the 2016-17 NBA offseason.
The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off a terrible 10-72 2015-16 NBA campaign and ended up with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. It seems that the tanking efforts of the 76ers organization is starting to come to an end, as Philadelphia drafted Ben Simmons at No. 1 out of LSU and former first round pick Dario Saric is ready to come stateside in 2016-17.
Though Philadelphia almost certainly won’t sniff the Eastern Conference Playoffs in 2017, they have many intriguing assets potentially on the trading block, especially in their front court. One player is clearly not handling the threat of trade rumors very well in second-year big man Jahlil Okafor.
The quartet of Okafor trade rumors tweets have to have made new 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo at least concerned about his starting center. Philadelphia’s previous general manager Sam Hinkie selected Okafor with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Okafor starred as a one-and-done player for the 2015 National Champion Duke Blue Devils.
Regardless of if Okafor likes playing in Philadelphia or not, he has to get over the possibility of being traded. The NBA is a business and rarely do even star players stay with one team for their entire basketball careers.
Okafor does offer high upside as a great low-post player, but this series of tweets might make other general managers wary about trading for the former Duke star big man.
