Giancarlo Stanton’s 61 HRs in Derby causes Marlins marketing disaster

Giancarlo Stanton’s record display at the 2016 Home Run Derby causes marketing nightmare for the Miami Marlins.

Giancarlo Staton proved with absolute certainty that he is the strongest slugger in Major League Baseball after hitting a Home Run Derby record 61 total home runs during the contest on Monday.

Stanton dominated in the first two rounds, defeating both Robinson Cano and Mark Trumbo with ease to advance to the finals. In the championship round, the Marlins outfielder dethroned defending champ Todd Frazier, prevailing by a score of 20-13.


Prior to the event, the Marlins ran a “flash offer” that read:

“Tonight our very own Giancarlo Stanton faces off against the MLB’s best sluggers in the 2016 T-Mobile Home Run Derby! The more Giancarlo homers, the more you save on Marlins tickets! Each time G launches a home run out of Petco Park, we’ll knock a percentage point off future marlins tickets. Example 25 home runs = 25% off Marlins tickets.”

By smashing a total 61 home runs on during the Derby, the Marlins ticket promotion should provide fans with a 61% discount. However, in classic Marlins fashion, the organization has altered the initial offer by limiting the maximum discount to just 25% off on all seats for 35 specified future games.

Team president David Samson admits to ESPN’s Darren Rovell that terms were not specified in initial emails to fans, but he does want to honor Stanton’s terrific performance.

“What Giancarlo did was so cool that we are working on an additional offer. We are thinking about picking a game and offering 61% off.”

This poorly executed marketing strategy is just another black mark on an organization that has earned the reputation of valuing the bottom line over their own fans.
