Highlights and results from Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose at WWE Battleground 2016

A triple threat match between the three former members of The Shield has long been on the list of dream matches for fans. So when it was announced as the main event for WWE Battleground 2016 with the WWE Championship on the line, everyone was ecstatic for what was about to happen. That it happened on the heels of Reigns’ suspension and the WWE Draft only added to the suspense of it all.

Rollins began the match in a trolling mood, but Roman was having none of it early on. He dispatched Seth quickly, leaving he and Dean one-on-one briefly—but it was clear that their friendship didn’t extend into this match.

However, Rollins quickly came back into the fold and tried to stay aggressive. Of course, that plan was better as an idea than in execution as Reigns took it to him again, this time with a little help from Ambrose as the champ also took out Roman.

Soon after, though, the two-time former champ in Rollins then started getting a bit devious and earned himself an advantage in the match. When the action then spilled to the outside, though, Reigns was able to counter and send Seth into the timekeeper’s area. A charging Dean then took the whole trio into that area before they all gathered themselves and got back into the ring.

Once again occupying the squared circle, Ambrose remained the aggressor on Roman and tried to score a pin. When Reigns kicked out, though, Rollins came flying in with a huge splash that almost won him the match.

Always looking strong, Roman Reigns wouldn’t be taken out for long, though, as he got his legs back underneath him and handed out a heavy dose of Superman Punches to both men.

Ambrose seemed unfazed, though, as he came back with a punch to Rollins and then a Clothesline to Reigns of his own.

Roman continued to not stay down, though, so Ambrose and Rollins became unlikely partners to try and take him out.

Reigns tried to counter, when the two went for a powerbomb, but was ultimately sent to the outside where he was met by topa suicidas from both men.

They weren’t done, though, as they then stayed together to take Reigns through an announce table with a huge tag-team powerbomb.

That’s where their partnership ended, though, as Seth grabbed a chair and—in a moment reminiscent of The Shield’s breakup—took it to the backs of both of his former brothers.

Rollins then brought Dean into the ring to try and end it, but the champ fought back to get a little breathing room. Ambrose’s breathing room was short-lived when he went to the top rope, though, as Rollins came charging and hit his massive Superplex-to-Falcon Arrow combo.

Ambrose kicked out, though, and then things starting getting absolutely crazy as hell. There were numerous counters to everything, powerbombs and Superman Punches dished out by Roman, a Pedigree delivered to Reigns from Rollins, and so much more.

While things continued to break down, though, Reigns then hit Rollins with a Spear, but that led him right into Ambrose for Dirty Deeds. The champ hit it and pinned the former champ to get the win, 1-2-3.

Winner: Dean Ambrose
