Philadelphia Eagles hire Brian Dawkins for scouting department
By Brad Weiss
Brian Dawkins, the former hard-hitting defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles, was added to their scouting department on Saturday.
Brian Dawkins did a lot in his NFL career, which was played mostly as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. A second round draft selection of the team in the 1996 NFL Draft, Hawkins immediately made an impact for the team, replacing Eric Zomalt as the team’s starting safety during his rookie season.
In 1999, Dawkins made his first of nine Pro Bowls, including seven as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Dawkins finished his career with the Denver Broncos, but it is his time with the Eagles that really made his career.
On Saturday, the team announced Dawkins was added to the Eagles’ scouting department, which will be his first job within the organization since leaving for Denver. Dawkins retired from the NFL after the 2011 season, and the following year, his number 20 jersey was retired by the Eagles. He is one of only nine players to have earned that honor.
Dawkins is the inaugural recipient of the Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship, which is a brand new program that the league started to help former players begin their careers in scouting. The Eagles currently have 20 people on their scouting staff, and Dawkins is the only former player listed.
Throughout his career, Dawkins showed his incredible leadership on and off the field, as he was named the Byron “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year in 2008. His 13-year career was one of the best of any defensive back to play in the NFL, and there is no doubt he will be able to be a terrific scout due to his knowledge of the position.
