NFL Rumors: Chip Kelly says no reunion with Nick Foles
It ‘s no surprise Nick Foles was cut by the Los Angeles Rams, but San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has shut down the prospect of a reunion with his former quarterback.

The writing was on the wall for Nick Foles even before the Los Angeles Rams drafted Jared Goff No. 1 overall this year, and last week he was finally released. Rumors have linked him to multiple teams that may be in the market for a backup quarterback, including the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys.
One possible landing spot for Foles is the San Francisco 49ers. Foles had by far the best season of his career under Chip Kelly with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, when he threw for 2,891 yards with 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions over 13 games. But, according to CSN Bay Area, Kelly has dismissed the idea of a reunion.
Here’s an extended quote from Kelly, which came during a Monday morning radio appearance on KNBR’s “Murph and Mac Show”:
"“I’m a big fan of Nick, but right now our eggs are in Kap and Blaine’s basket, and we’re going to see what those guys can do,” “And (we’re) very confident in those guys and it has really nothing to do with Nick, but it has to do a lot with both Blaine and Kap, in terms of where they are and giving them an ample shot at being the quarterback. I think if you have three guys in the mix, it gets really diluted and now you’re not going to get enough reps for anybody to make a determination of who the quarterback is going to be.”"
The 49ers are committed to a competition between Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick for the starting job under center right now, with Gabbert the tentative front-runner. Adding Foles to the mix would only complicate things further, and Kelly is right to want to avoid that — unless or until a significant injury changes things. A path to playing time doesn’t exist for Foles in San Francisco as things stand, even if Kelly had any interest.
Quite frankly, after what he has put on tape over the last couple seasons, Foles should not find a chance to compete for a starting job anywhere.
