Belgium fans are collectively jumping off a bridge on Twitter after Roberto Martinez was appointed as their new manager.

Considering that Belgium is ranked as the second best country in the world by FIFA, they haven’t exactly hit the heights. This is easily the golden age of Belgian football, as they boast unbelievable depth at every position, and yet they’ve fallen short at every competition.

They could be forgiven for losing to a better Argentina team at the World Cup, but losing to Wales in the Euro quarterfinals was enough for Marc Wilmots to get sacked. Fans eagerly awaited to see who his replacement was, but when Roberto Martinez was announced, Belgians all over the world collectively jumped off a bridge:

In case you don’t know who Roberto Martinez is, he has managed the likes of Swansea, Wigan, and most recently, Everton. His best achievement was winning the FA Cup with Wigan over Manchester City, but in three seasons with Everton, he has made the team progressively worse and worse. Just this past season, they finished 11th, although their style of play resembled a relegation side.

Their poor play towards the end of the season was enough for Romelu Lukaku to ask for an exit from Everton. He thought that he was free of Martinez’s clutches after he was fired by Everton, but getting hired by Belgium puts the two back at square one.

You would think that Belgium would have higher standards than Martinez in a manager considering they’re supposed to be one of the best teams in the world. Fans had better hope that the board knows what they’re doing, or else group stage exits might become the norm for their team now.
